Single-line dachshund outline tattoo

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black outline forms a simplified dachshund with a long body, short legs, a rounded ear and a pointed snout. The linework is even and thin, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The subject sits centred in a close crop, with the skin texture visible around it.

Dear Mags, you'll think I've finally lost the plot, but the dog came through the barrier at Coquelles again this morning and I had to write it down before the shift swallowed it. Long, low, legs like afterthoughts, nose out in front as if it had already decided where we were all going. Its owner had the papers in a plastic wallet and the dog had nothing, which I told him was the wrong way round.

Customs is not a place for sentiment. We check lorries for cigarettes and people for their nerves. But this little dachshund traces its own route, round the bollards and under the arm of the barrier, never lifting off the tarmac even when the lead goes slack. Someone on my team calls it the one-line dog, because whoever drew it would have had to keep the pen moving the whole way without a break.

Thursday I asked the man why the dog never lifts. He said it isn't allowed to. Said the vet told him a dachshund's back is a long promise and you have to walk it carefully. I laughed, and then I stamped his sheet, because the stamp was the only thing I was sure of.

I keep thinking about that line. No shading, no fuss, just one unbroken path from the nose to the curl of the tail. Write back and tell me I'm daft, and tell me whether the Channel was as flat on Sunday as the forecast promised.
