Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, it has a temper like my brother-in-law. The fair came through Harrowgate the year the river froze, and it had one thing nobody could guess the trick of: a fox painted on a board outside the big tent, drawn in one stroke of black, never lifting the brush. Old Mrs Pennock swore it had been drawn running. She'd seen it move, she said, when the wind came off the moor.

My cousin Tom took a job on the ferris wheel that winter, and the showman, a thin man called Ashdown with rings on every finger, paid him in coppers and a bottle of gin. One night Tom came back soaked to the skin and white as candle wax. He said he'd gone round the back of the tent to piss and found the fox board leaning against a wagon, and the line had come loose from the wood, and it was crawling along the frost like a thread pulled through a needle. Tom said it stopped by his boot, lifted that curled tail, and looked at him the way a magistrate looks at a poacher.

We laughed him out of the Crown. But the next morning the board was blank. Just white, not a mark on it. Ashdown packed the fair and was gone before the thaw, and nobody ever saw the fox again, though Tom swore he felt something tugging at the hem of his coat every time he crossed a field.

So when you see a fox drawn with no lifting of the pen, don't you go trusting that it's only ink. Ink stays where it's put. That one has somewhere to be.
