Sleeping bunny on a skull-topped donut

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A sleeping white rabbit with closed eyes rests its head and paws on a brown donut covered in pink icing. The icing drips over the edge and includes small skull decorations, and pink goo also runs down the rabbit's head and ears. The linework is black and the rabbit is softly shaded with grey, while the icing and drips use bright pink and red.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bakery on Vellum Lane had been closed since the spring, when Mrs Odile Crane went into the back room with a tray of pastries and did not come out for three days. Her nephew Tobias inherited the keys, a sack of stale flour, and a white rabbit that had been living under the proving cabinet. The rabbit did not care for the shop's new hours, which were none. It preferred to sleep on the warm lid of the big oven, and it preferred the donuts that Mrs Crane had left cooling on the rack, each one glazed in raspberry icing that ran in slow red tongues down the sides.

Tobias tried to throw the donuts out. Every morning he found them back on the rack, glazed fresher than before, and every morning the rabbit lay curled on top of the largest one with its eyes shut and its pink-tipped ears folded flat. Tiny skulls had appeared in the icing, sugar-pale and grinning, and when he scraped one away a fresh one rose in its place like a bubble. The icing dripped onto the flagstones and set there in little garnet puddles that he could not mop up.

On the night he finally sat up with a lamp to watch, the rabbit opened one eye and looked at him with the patience of a creature that has been waiting for someone to stop being sensible. Tobias set the lamp down. He took the stale flour and the empty sack and went upstairs. In the morning there was one fewer donut on the rack and one more pink drip on the rabbit's ear, and the shop smelled, for the first time since spring, of something good.
