Sleeping cat curled up on an arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat sleeps curled into a loop, with its head tucked down and a paw tucked beneath it. The outline is a fine, even black line, with soft grey shading on the head, ear, paw and the length of the tail. The design sits on a plain skin background with dark surroundings, and the composition is centred on the curled body.

The last show was in Bideford, on a wet Tuesday with eleven people in the stands. Hargreaves, the owner, stood at the ticket hut afterwards with his hat in his hands and said the council wanted the field back by Friday. Orla nodded. She went to the caravan and found Tobias curled in the dip of the old velvet cushion from the lion cage, nose tucked under one paw, tail wrapped round him like a loose ribbon. He did not wake when she lifted him. He only gave a small grumble and settled back into the same loop.
She sat on the caravan steps for a long time with the cat heavy in her lap. The lights of the fairground across the road blinked on and off, and somewhere a generator coughed and caught. In the morning she would pack the trunks, sell the rigging to a scrap man from Exeter, and find a flat with a windowsill wide enough for a cat who had given up on heights. For tonight, the tent could fold itself up without her. Tobias had decided that, and so had she.
