Small minimalist cat on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple cat sitting upright, drawn with a single thin black outline with no shading. The cat has pointed ears, two dot eyes, and a striped tail curling along the bottom left. The tattoo sits alone in the centre of a pale forearm against a grey fabric background.

The rain has stopped, but the gutters on Crane Street are still talking to themselves when you turn in from the bus stop. The cat is already on the chapel steps, sitting bolt upright as if it has an appointment with the night. Its tail is wrapped round its feet, and the streetlamp catches the stripes along it, one thin mark after another, as though someone has ruled the pavement for it.

Nobody on the street owns it. Mrs Okafor at number nine calls it Biscuit and leaves a saucer by her bins, and the lad from the kebab shop swears it was here before the shop was. You have half a portion of chips in a paper cone, gone cold on the walk, so you pinch one out and set it on the step. The cat regards the chip, then you, with two small dot eyes that suggest it has watched a great many people make this mistake.
It doesn't eat. It only watches the launderette opposite, where the sign went dark in March and the woman who ran the late shift stopped coming in. You know this because you used to wait there with a basket on your hip while the machines turned. The cat has the same patience and the same upright stillness, as if somebody has to keep an eye on the windows until they light up again.
You finish the chips and fold the paper into a small square. When you look up the step is empty, and the chip is gone too, though you heard nothing running off. In the morning Mrs Okafor will say she saw it on the wall at dawn, washing its face with great seriousness, and the lamp over the launderette will still be dark.
