Small black brush-stroke tattoo on the wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised clenched fist fills the upper part of the frame against a black background. A small, solid black calligraphic mark sits on the forearm just above the wrist, made of a tapering stroke with a rounded loop at one end. The photograph is monochrome with soft, directional lighting that picks out the knuckles and skin texture.

Dear Tomasz, the brush you left in the jar of water on the bench has finally gone to work. I know you thought I'd let it rot, but I couldn't bring myself to throw out the goat hair that still holds a crust of ochre. Mr Hale came in on Tuesday wanting his shopfront lettered before the harbour inspectors arrived, and I took the job because the rent is due and because the words were easy: a single mark, a hand's length tall, to stand above the door where the old name used to be.

I painted it the way Mr Pell taught us, from the wrist, without pausing. The stroke rises thick and then thins like a sail running out of wind, and at the top it has to turn back on itself in a small closed loop, because Pell said a line that ends in a point is a line that gives up. I did it three times on scrap paper before I trusted it. The fourth time the loop closed cleanly, and the whole thing looked less like a letter than a hook of smoke.
Mr Hale stood a long time looking at it. He asked what it meant. I said it meant nothing I could translate, only that someone had decided the sign shouldn't be left blank. He nodded and paid in coins. At noon the dockers from the north wall came past in a loose line, and one of them stopped, raised his closed fist toward the mark as if in greeting, and walked on. Nobody asked me to explain that either.
The ship's due in Hull on the nineteenth. Come and see the sign, and bring the brush back to me in person, because I have started to think it was yours all along.
