Small black finger tattoos beside pastel nails

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands with pastel blue nails hold a fluffy pale blue phone case. Several small black tattoos sit on the fingers, including a loose line mark on the top knuckle, an outlined shape on the middle finger and a small shaded form on the lower finger. The image is a close, well-lit crop with the phone case filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mairi Tulloch had spun the wool of the Skerry ewes for thirty winters, and never once had a fleece come off the hill the colour of the sky before rain. The ram that fathered it stood on the cliff above Hallow Bay with his back to the wind, and when Mairi climbed up with her basket he turned his head and looked at her the way a man looks at a debt he means to collect.

"Give me the first shearing," he said, though his mouth did not move, "and I will teach your hands to be quick enough for the mainland."

She said no, because her grandmother had said no to everything that came up that cliff, and Mairi had been raised to trust the old refusals. He laughed, a sound like a gull landing on wet slate, and walked into the sea without a splash. The next morning the fleece lay on her kitchen table, though the door had been barred all night. It was already spun into a thread so fine it caught the light like frost on a window.

She wove it into a cloak, but the thread would not hold a seam unless she pressed it with her fingers, and each time she pressed it the skin of her fingers left a small mark behind, a loop, a knot, a single feather. Her youngest brother came in from the boats that week with a pale blue bundle pressed to his chest, saying the ram had come to the harbour asking for her and had left this behind. Mairi took it and felt it breathe against her palms. She tied off the last thread with her teeth, and the ram never climbed the cliff again.
