The rain came early to Hollin Orchard that year, before the windfalls were gathered, and old Maud Pellow said the hill spirit was angry because nobody had left it its share of the Bramley crop. Her grandson Tam did not believe in hill spirits, but he believed in the ladder, and the ladder was standing in the wet grass with nobody on it.

He found the thing sitting in the crook of the third apple tree. It was round as a loaf and the grey of wet stone, with two ears that stood up like folded hands and a mouth that was only a wide line across its belly. It held a sycamore leaf the size of a tea tray over its head, and the rain ran off the edge of it in a clean curtain.
"You are letting the water in on my ladder," it said, not unkindly. Tam asked what it wanted. The creature considered this for so long that the rain eased and a moon showed over the eastern wall, thin as a paring knife. "Nothing you have," it said at last. "Only a place under the tree. Bring a shelter next time and you may stay."
Tam went home and came back at dusk with the black cloth umbrella from the church porch, the one nobody had claimed in twenty years. He opened it beside the creature and held it steady, and the leaf came down slowly to rest on the grass. Maud left a dish of windfalls under that tree every autumn after, and each morning it was empty, and each night the little moon hung over the orchard like a coin someone had dropped and nobody would ever pick up.
