Small blue teardrop on a finger

Hand · Colour · Photo

A close-up of a small teardrop shape on the side of a finger, filled with blue ink and outlined in black. The shading is soft, with a lighter blue centre and darker edges, and the tattoo is set against plain, healthy-looking skin. The composition is tight on the finger, with the rest of the hand and background softly out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lamp's failing and so is my voice, so you'll have to lean in the way the gulls do when the gutting starts. Nineteen sixty-one, the Morwenna Rose went out of Newlyn with five men aboard and a net that had been mended so often it was more knot than cord. Her skipper was Ezra Pascoe, who never once said a kind word about the weather.

On the third night the net came up empty except for one thing: a single drop of water, blue as a cold sky, caught in the fold of Ezra's glove when he hauled. It didn't run. It sat there swollen and certain, as if it had made up its mind about something. The cook reached for a rag to wipe it off, and Ezra caught his wrist and held his own palm over the lamp to watch it shine. Nobody touches that, he said. The sea's asking for something back, and I mean to see what it is.

They kept the drop in a brass thimble and carried it home. On every landing after, Ezra would lift the thimble, tap the side with his thumb, and the water never spilt. Some say it was the brass that held it, some say it was the stubborn old man. When the Rose was sold for scrap that spring, the thimble went to a buyer from Penzance, and the story goes that he rowed out past the breakwater on the first flat morning and tipped it over the side.

So if you're ever out past the light and the water lies still as a looking glass, look at your own hand. If there's one drop sitting on the knuckle that won't run off, don't wipe it. That's Ezra's, and it's still waiting to be let go.
