The tide had been out since noon, and the causeway ran pale across the shingle towards the mainland. You carried the brass oil can in one hand and the logbook under your arm, and the fox watched both with its black-tipped ears flat to its skull. When the wind backed round to the north-west, you found the last page of the ledger had gone soft with damp, and the ink for the night's entry had run into a blue smear you could not read.

Your father's chest had kept him in bed since Michaelmas. He told you the light was yours now, the way the sea belonged to everyone. So you climbed the iron stairs at dusk, wound the clockwork, and watched the beam sweep the water for the Margaret Ann, which was late. The fox came up behind you, settled on the gallery grating, and tucked its nose against its white chest as if it were keeping something warm.

At two in the morning a dark hull showed beyond the reef, and then a lantern answered yours from the mouth of the harbour. You did not wave. You kept the lamp turning, and beside you the fox lifted its head for the first time that night and looked out to sea, the way you might look at a friend coming home.
