Small cross tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand resting on a car dashboard, with a small black cross tattooed on the side of one finger between the knuckles. The cross has simple, even linework in solid black ink, and the rest of the image is muted with a warm, faded tone. Two silver rings are worn on other fingers, one engraved with a heart and the word true, and the nails have chipped dark polish.

The dashboard had gone grey with dust since the last rains, and Tamsin Reeve counted mile markers to keep her mind off the hum of the cells. The sun visor had cracked into a web. Outside, the A1 ran between hedges of wild hop that had swallowed the signs, and the sky over Doncaster was the colour of weak tea.

Her brother Owen had pressed the silver ring on her before the sickness emptied the valley towns. He said a ring was worthless to a scavenger unless it could be traded, so she had kept it, and when a scrapper in Wetherby offered her a sack of salt for it she laughed and refused. Instead she had pricked a small cross between her knuckles with a sterile needle and a pot of soot ink, the way the old nurses marked crates of medicine. It was a promise she could feel without looking.
Near the Ferrybridge services she found a convoy lorry on its side, doors open, a single tin of peaches rolling in the gutter. Pinned above a dead radio in the cab was a child's drawing of a house with a crooked chimney and a yellow sun in the corner. She took the peaches and the drawing and left the radio where it lay.
By dusk the cells were at nine percent and the pylons ahead were blinking red. She pulled into the lee of a cutting, set the peaches on the dash to keep them cool, and carved one more small cross into the wood beside the others she had cut there, one for every place she had found something worth carrying. Then she drove on toward the lights of Leeds.
