Small cross tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with glossy dark red nails rests against a dark grey garment edged with beaded trim. A small, simple cross is tattooed on the side of one finger in thin black linework. The soft-focus background is dark, so the tattoo and the nails stand out clearly.

The beads came aboard at Falmouth in a sealed tin, two thousand jet beads from a Whitby cutter's stock, and Nell Garrow counted them twice on the cabin table while the swell leaned the lamp back and forth. The coat for the second mate had to be finished before the Horn. She had one length of grey wool, a pair of shears she had borrowed from the cook, and a needle she kept threaded with black silk.

She stitched in the evenings, following the chalk line she had drawn down the sleeve and across the back. Abel Strick, the bosun, sat on the locker and watched her hands. He asked why a plain working coat needed beads at all. Nell said the sea took the colour out of everything, and a man ought to have something that caught the light when the lamp was out.
The squall came on the nineteenth night, with the ship lying over until the water ran across the galley floor. The lamp went out with a crack, and in the dark Nell felt along the bulkhead for the coat on its hook. She had sewn one last thing into the left cuff that morning, a small cross in black silk, no bigger than a fingernail, placed where a hand would rest on a rail.
When Abel came down at dawn, salt-white and shaking, he went straight to the hook. His thumb found the cross before he had even looked at the beads. He did not say anything. He only stood with his hand against the cuff, feeling the stitches, until the deck stopped groaning under him.
