Small cross tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black cross is tattooed on the wrist, drawn in thin, even linework with solid black fill. Several silver charm bracelets sit over the wrist, including a San Francisco Giants logo, a Mickey Mouse enamel charm and a castle charm. The background is a blurred daytime sky and a pale castle with blue spires.

Ruth had sold charms off the same trestle table on Pellow pier for thirty-one summers, and she could tell a bored customer from a broke one by the way they held a bangle up to the light. The boy who came on the Tuesday of the regatta held his up like a jeweller's glass. He had a fistful of coins in one hand and a list in the other, written on the back of a ferry timetable, and every item on it was a place he had never been.

"Got a castle?" he asked. "A proper one, with the turrets."
She had one, a pale pewter thing with blue enamel on the spires, and she watched him turn it over as though it might be a trick. He bought it, then a red enamel mouse for his sister, then a tiny cross for his nan, who had made him promise to bring something back from every town he hadn't seen yet. The coins ran out before the list did.
He came back on the Friday with every charm on his bracelet clinking, and he wanted to swap the cross for something bigger. Ruth told him no. A cross was for keeping, she said, and you didn't trade what you were keeping. He thought about it, then tipped his bag out across the counter: one dented sixpence, a bus ticket from a town she'd never heard of, and a pencil stub worn down to the thumbnail.
"Then I'll owe you a castle," he said, grinning, and walked off down the pier with the sun on his wrist.
