Small figures and heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a simple silhouette of an adult figure with two smaller figures beside it, joined by a heart-shaped outline below. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, in black ink. A US quarter sits above the design on the wrist, and the blurred car dashboard and steering wheel fill the background.

Mam drew us on the kitchen window every night the cage was late. She did it with the side of her thumb, pushing through the steam that came off the copper, so that we came out grey and smudged on the glass. Her first, tall and bent a little at the neck, the way she held her head when she was tired. Then me and our Davy, one either side, no higher than her hip.

Under us she drew a heart, but it never came out right. The damp kept getting in the way, and the top curve always slid into a blob. She said it didn't matter, that the heart was for the one who'd be walking up the pit road at six with his lamp still lit and his face black as a stove. She'd rub it clean with her sleeve when the kettle went quiet and start again.
The night the bell at the head went on and on, nobody in the row would say what it meant. Mam kept drawing. Davy kept asking where Da was. I took the cloth off her and drew the heart myself, big and lopsided, pressing so hard the glass squeaked.
At twenty past six the back gate clacked. Da came in with the cold on him and stood in the doorway looking at the window, and I watched his eyes go to the heart before they went to any of us. He didn't say anything. He just took the cloth from my hand and breathed on the glass until the lines came up again, all of us, every one.
