Small fine line cats and flowers on thighs

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two upper legs, seen from the front, are covered in many small tattoos of cats, a large open flower, a branch with leaves, cherries, daisies and a crescent moon. The linework is thin and even, with no shading beyond simple outlines and a few small solid areas. All the ink is black, and the designs are spaced apart over smooth, pale skin against a light background.

Dear Nell, the cats have taken the boat over again. Tabitha had her kittens under the tarpaulin on Tuesday, four of them, and Mr Pilling from the lock cottage says the ginger one isn't his, though he's been leaving it saucers of milk since Easter. I have stopped arguing. A boat with no cat on the roof feels like a kettle with no handle.

We moored below Stoke lock where the towpath runs out into a bank of daisies, and the old cherry tree leans over the water so the fruit drops straight into the cut. The kittens chase the fallen ones and come up with their whiskers stained red. Every evening the sky goes the colour of weak tea and the new moon hangs above the bridge like a paring somebody forgot to throw away. Tabitha sits on the front deck and watches it with her tail wrapped round her feet, as if she's waiting for it to explain itself.

You asked whether I'll come back to Leeds for the wedding. I have the train timetable on the table, the one with the coffee ring over Thursday. I keep reading it and then looking up at the willow branches, which have come into leaf so fast this week that the boat is in green shade by noon.

Last night I counted them on the roof, all seven, each one sitting in a different spot as though someone had drawn them in pencil and then gone off to find a rubber. I think I'll wait until the cherries are finished. The cats won't mind, the moon will be full by then, and I can tell you properly then.

Love, Mags
