Small giraffe on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single giraffe stands side on, with its head turned left and its legs and tail clearly drawn. The spots are filled with solid black shapes, while the outline and mane use fine, even linework. The tattoo is black ink only, set against pale skin and a dark background in a simple, centred composition.

It stood on the platform under the lamp with its head turned to the left, looking back down the line the way the last train had gone. It did not eat the timetable posters. It did not wander onto the tracks. When the stationmaster, Albert Venn, walked out with a lantern, the animal lowered its head to his shoulder and breathed warm into his collar, and he said afterwards that it smelled of hay and iron filings.

For three nights it waited at the end of the platform. Children from the terrace came to count its spots, and each child counted a different number, so the town agreed the spots were not fixed and were perhaps only moving the way rain moves on a window. On the fourth morning a woman in a grey coat stepped off the milk train, saw the animal, and said only, 'There you are,' and walked off towards the hills without her case.

The giraffe followed her out past the gate, its long legs taking the cinders slowly. Albert kept the lantern lit a long time after, though nothing else came down the line, and he never did enter it in the ledger.
