Small giraffe outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a giraffe with raised head and ossicones sits on the inner ankle, above a white sock and a dark trainer. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The photograph is in black and white, so the ink appears as a dark grey outline against pale skin, with the subject placed in the lower left of the frame.

The night porter at St Ebba's swore the giraffe came up the back stairs after the lights dimmed, and nobody believed him until the new nurse, Marit, followed its hoof marks through the floor polish from the linen store to ward six. She was not frightened. Her mother had kept goats above a fjord and had taught her that tall animals only walk where they can see the way out.

The giraffe did not hurry. It stopped at each bed and lowered its head until its long neck curved over the blankets, and the patients who were awake said afterwards that it breathed on them like a warm lamp. It was not looking for anyone in particular. It was only checking that the ones who could not sleep were not alone with the dark, and before moving on it lifted its head again so the two small horns caught the corridor light.

On the fourth night Marit asked it why it bothered. The giraffe said nothing, being a giraffe, but it bent its neck towards the window at the end of the ward, where the sky above the car park was turning grey, and she understood. Dawn was the hardest hour for those who had been awake all night. Someone had to watch for it coming.

When the day shift arrived at seven, Marit was filling in the charts with a pencil behind her ear. The porter asked if she had seen the giraffe. She said yes, and that it had gone out by the fire door the way it always did, walking back over the hills to wherever it slept.
