Small heart tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small, solid heart sits on the ankle, filled with grey shading and a single horizontal teal stripe across its middle. The leg is photographed from the side against dark carpet, with the heart as the clear focal point. The tattoo is shown at a modest scale, with the grey tones dominating and the teal used sparingly.

The tide had left the slate on the lower step of the harbour wall, and Maud Penhallow turned it over with the toe of her boot before she bothered to pick it up. Grey all through, the way the whole coast was grey in February, except for one seam running across its middle like a thread of sea seen from the cliff path. She put it in her coat pocket anyway, next to the ferry receipt and the key to a cottage her brother had sold.

Her brother Tom had never believed in luck, only in weather. He said the stone would crack once it dried out on the warm kitchen sill, and it didn't. It sat above the sink through the winter, patient and grey, and every morning she caught the teal line taking the light before anything else in the room did.
When the cottage went to the new owners in March, she wrapped the slate in a tea towel and carried it down to the quay. The boat for the mainland was tied up, its engine ticking over. A man on the deck, who looked as though he had been waiting for someone to ask, took the parcel from her and asked nothing at all.
She watched the boat slip past the breakwater, the sky lightening over the headland. Her hand was empty and cold, and for the first time in years the pocket of her coat felt like just a pocket. Somewhere out there, she supposed, the stone was being put to some use she would never know about. That seemed all right.
