Small Hello Kitty tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of the Hello Kitty character sits on the side of a pointing finger, drawn with thin black outlines and a white face. A pink bow sits above the head, as the only colour in the design. The hand has red nail polish and is set against a dark fishnet background, with the tattoo positioned near the centre of the frame.

Dear Maud, the galley of the Halloran Star is the warmest room aboard and the most short-tempered, and since Cook's wrist went bad at Tilbury the whole kitchen has been left to me. Yesterday the bosun found a stowaway asleep in the flour store, a small white cat with a pink ribbon tied on top of her head, and she would not come out for anybody. Cook swore she'd go over the side at Gibraltar. I lured her with a saucer of tinned pilchards and the last of the condensed milk, and she let me stroke her as far as the bow was concerned, which I took as a promise.

She wouldn't be drawn, not properly, but the carpenter, Ruben, sat on an upturned bucket and sketched her for me on the back of a spoiled menu card with a stub of pencil. Thin black lines for her outline, a face left blank and white, and that bow, the only bit of colour he would allow himself, because he said a cat with too much paint looks like she's trying to sell you something. We pinned it above the bread oven. The men came in for their tea and stood looking at it longer than they looked at their dinner.

We raised Valparaiso on a Tuesday. When the gangway went down she was gone, and so was a loaf of Cook's good rye, and the pilchard saucer had been licked so clean it shone. In its place, on the flour sack where she had slept, lay the pink ribbon, folded neatly, as if somebody had wanted it kept. I've put it in the drawer with your letters. Write back soon and tell me whether Father's allotment has finally given up any potatoes.
