Maddox Fenn, the boatswain, swore she was lucky and cursed her in the same breath, because she sat on the coils of rope at the change of every watch and watched the sea with the patience of a magistrate. When the barometer began to fall in the third week out, she got up, shook her white coat, and walked straight to the captain's door.

Nobody believed Fenn when he said she had been scratching at the hatch to be let out. The captain ordered the topsails reefed anyway. By dusk the sky had turned the colour of pewter and the wind came round like a fist.

Afterwards the men told it differently. Some said the bow glowed when the lightning struck the mainmast. Others said the cat sat on the wheel box all night, ribbon bright in the lantern light, and the helmsman steered by that small red knot because he could see nothing else. In the morning they raised land, the cat jumped down onto the quay, and the sailors swore she never once looked back at the sea she had outwitted.
