We're pitched on the common at Hadlow until Sunday, and the wind has been trying to take the big top with it every night. Dessie has finally given up on the coconut shy. He says the nuts have grown legs. I've told him the nuts were always sly, which he does not find funny.

The thing I actually want to tell you about is the cat. Pip found it in the bottom of the prize box on Tuesday, a little china cat no bigger than a thimble, with a pink ribbon painted on top of her head and a smile like she knows where the takings have gone. Nobody could say who put her there. Pip decided she was lucky and wouldn't let anyone sell her, not even for a shilling, so she has been keeping her in the pocket of her cardigan with a gap in the seam.

On Thursday the ghost train's operator came round asking for a lamp, and his little boy went white when he saw the cat. Pip, bless her, marched over and pressed it into his palm and told him to hold on tight to his courage. He cried, then laughed, then rode the train forty times for free. Dessie says that's the most anybody has ever paid us in trade.

Last night I stood by the wheel and watched the lights come on one by one. Pip was asleep on the bench, and I saw the pink bow catching the gold of the ticket booth as the carriages swung round, and I thought, that's the only prize on this whole fair nobody won fair and square. Write soon, and tell Mum the scarf fits.
