Small horseshoe outline on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small horseshoe outline sits on the inner wrist, with a few short dots along the inside curve that suggest nail holes. The linework is a single fine, even black or dark navy line with no shading. The skin is pale and the background is softly out of focus, keeping the tattoo as the clear subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The horseshoe had hung on the wheelhouse door of the Mary Hollis since before Amos Penrose could read, and by the time he became skipper he had stopped really looking at it. What he noticed were the nail holes. There were seven, four down one side and three down the other, each a rust-brown freckle in the blue paint. His father had put them there, and his grandfather before him, and every one had been counted by a boy standing on the quay with his hands in his pockets, waiting for the boat to come round the harbour wall.

Off the Lizard in March the engine coughed, then gave up altogether, and the boat drifted under a grey sail with the wind backing and the light going. Nell, sixteen and seasick over the rail, asked why anyone would nail a bent bit of iron to a boat. Amos told her it was for the men who never came back, which was the answer his father had given him to make him stop asking. Nell did not stop. She wanted to know whether the holes were there to hold the shoe on or whether a horse had worn them out, and whether the sea had done the same to the men.

They limped into Porthgwidden at dusk on the jib alone, and Amos tied up without a word. In the wheelhouse he took out his penknife and worked the paint around the top nail until it gave. It came free bright and clean, the first he had ever loosened. He dropped it into the tin where the spare bolts lived and told Nell the iron would stay on the door for her to take when she had a boat of her own.

In the morning she was up before him, a hammer in one hand and the nail between her teeth, and the shoe was back on the door before the kettle boiled.
