Small ornamental tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with long, dark, almond-shaped nails, a lit cigarette held between two fingers, and a small tattoo on the middle finger, just above the knuckle. The tattoo appears to be a compact black ornamental or tribal-style mark with bold, curved lines. The background is a grey paved surface, with black canvas shoes visible at the lower left.

Dear Ilse, the seal finally came back from the engravers in Vellis, and I have to tell you before the post goes that it is wrong. Master Corran cut the crest of the Marsh Crown, the three curled reeds, but he cut them bent the other way, so every impression leaves them leaning toward the sea. The council says it is a fault of the wax. I know it is not. I held the brass up to the lamp and the curls turn back on themselves like a knotted rope.

I went down to the harbour office to ask Tomas Greve, who has kept the tide ledgers for forty years. He did not look up from his ink. He said the reeds were always meant to lean toward the water, because the first queen signed her treaties facing the tide, and a seal must face what it promises. Then he showed me a page from a book older than the kingdom's current name, with the same bent reeds drawn in the margin beside a list of drowned names.

So I did the sensible thing and kept the bad seal. Tonight I pressed it into the wax of the grain-tax order, reeds leaning seaward, and sent it down to the quay. When the carter drove off, the wax was still soft, and the reeds had already begun to sag a little under their own weight, as if the ink had decided to go wherever it was pointed.

I am not frightened, Ilse, only tired of being the only one who can see it. Write back and tell me I have had too little sleep. Your brother, Aldo.
