The relay finally carried your message, though it took eleven weeks to reach the ring, so forgive me if my news is old by the time you read it. The hydroponics bay has a new custom now. Every crew member who finishes a first shift on the outer spokes draws a heart on the bulkhead beside their bunk with a grease pencil, and they draw only the outline. Nobody fills them in. Mum's old bunk on Deck Four still has hers, faded to the colour of weak tea, and Oskar's has two hearts stacked one above the other because he could never decide.

I asked Teodor why we don't colour them, and he said the fill is for the thing you have already got, and the outline is for the thing you are still waiting on. He said it like a joke, but he was not joking, and I think that is why I couldn't sleep.

Yesterday I finished my own. Standing in the cold of the airlock with the stylus ticking against the metal, I drew the line once, twice, and then a third time where my hand had drifted. It is wobbly. The bulkhead has a seam running straight through its middle, so the heart is split down the centre, which Teodor says is a sign I am an honest cartographer.

I haven't filled it in. I thought about it, I really did, but there is still a window of stars out past the rim I have not charted, and I would rather leave the space empty for a while longer. Write back and tell me what you would colour in, if it were yours to choose.
