Pine tree on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a tall conifer with layered, tiered branches and a straight trunk sits on the side of the ribcage below the arm. The image has no visible shading or colour, and the tree is centred in the frame. The background is indoors and out of focus, with the person's hand and a ring visible at the lower edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Kallias had been told three times by the master that the pine was too tall for the amphora, and three times he had painted it anyway, because the widow had asked for a tree that could be seen from the road. The slip was still wet on his thumb. Outside the workshop in the Kerameikos, carts rolled past carrying stone for the new wall, and the kiln smoke sat low over the rooftops as if waiting to be told where to go.

He had no interest in trees. His father sold olive oil and wanted him to sell it too. But the widow's husband had been a charcoal burner who came down from the hills each autumn with a mule and a sack of pine resin, and she had described him to Kallias the way a person describes weather: the set of his shoulders, the smell of him, the way he stood at the edge of a grove looking up as though counting branches. "Make the tiers level," she said. "He liked them stacked like a fan of wood."

So Kallias worked in the black slip, the most patient colour he knew, letting each stroke dry before he scraped the trunk clean with a bone point. The tree came out solid and dark against the reddish clay, every tier a little narrower than the one beneath it, and when he turned the vessel in the light from the doorway it looked less like decoration than like a view.

The master came back at dusk and studied it for a long time. Then he lifted the amphora, turned it once in the failing light, and set it on the top shelf, where a man who had spent his life among trees might have seen it from the road.
