Small pink flower with green leaves

Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a pink flower with an orange centre on a thin stem with two green leaves. Dark outlines define each petal and leaf, with flat solid fills and no visible shading. The small design sits near the centre of the frame against lightly textured skin.

The last of the lions went to a farm near Brecon in March, and by April the big top was folded on the lorry bed like a sleeping animal nobody wanted to wake. Mr Osgood counted the takings into a biscuit tin every night, and every night the tin felt lighter under my arm. I kept the cookhouse going because somebody had to stir the stew, and because the children from the estate still came to the field gate hoping for something.

Then there was Nell, the youngest clown, who had painted a flower on the door of the ticket wagon the summer before. Four petals of pink sat in a ring around an orange middle, the stem bent sideways, with two green leaves like open hands. She had borrowed a brush from the scene painter and used no ruler at all. Everyone said it looked like a child had done it. Mr Osgood said it was the only thing on the site that looked as if it meant to stay.

On the last night a boy in a torn coat came to the gate with a coin knotted in a handkerchief. He wanted to see the flower close, so I opened the wagon door and let him trace the dark outline with one finger, slowly, the way you would test a wet line. He asked whether it would wash off in the rain. I told him paint on wood lasts longer than people think, which was a kindness and not quite true.

In the morning the lorries pulled out, and I stood in the empty field with the biscuit tin under my arm. The flower was still there on the wagon door, turned toward the road where the convoy had gone, its orange centre bright in the first sun. I left it facing that way. Somebody should keep one thing pointing back the way we came.
