Small taco tattoo on the hand

Hand · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a taco sits on the back of a clenched fist, shown in side view against a plain grey-blue background. The taco has a golden-brown shell, with green lettuce and pinkish filling along the top, and it is outlined in dark ink. The colour is bright and the composition keeps the design as the clear focus.

Dear Marguerite, you will not believe what the bailiff's boy brought up from the cellar last Tuesday. Two dozen shells of toasted maize, still stacked in their cloth like the day the old Earl's cook fled the siege. I have spent three evenings trying to persuade the garrison that they are not a kind of armour. Sergeant Pruett insists they are, and has taken to wearing one strapped to his knuckles to frighten the shepherds at the gate.

The real trouble is the lettuce. Nobody in this valley has seen a green leaf since the frost, and the kitchen boy keeps shredding the last of the cabbage into a pot with a faint, hopeful expression. I told him what we need is a pinch of the pink salt from the chapel store and a spoonful of rendered mutton, and he looked at me as though I had proposed roasting the chaplain. Still, we have made eleven of the things now, and the gate has never been so well attended.

Yesterday the Earl himself came down, leaning on his stick, and asked me to fold one for him. He bit it, closed his eyes, and said nothing at all for a long while. Then he pressed a coin into my palm and told me to keep the recipe quiet until the spring thaw, when we can tell the neighbouring lords we have discovered a new way to eat a fist. I suspect he is joking. I have decided to be grateful either way.

Write when the roads open. Bring a sack of the proper maize if you can find one, and do not, under any circumstances, let Pruett near the lettuce.
