Pizza slice loop tattoo on the top of a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style pizza slice is bent into a figure-eight loop, with red pepperoni circles, orange crust and pale cheese drips along the edges. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the flat fills are simple with little shading. The design sits centrally on the top of a foot, with the toes visible at the bottom of the frame.

Ruth had been up since three, and the dough had already won two arguments with her before the sky over the car park started to grey. Her brother Dev had left a note taped to the proving rack: Do not let the deck oven see the Sunday special. She didn't understand it until the flatbread came out folded into a figure of eight, orange crust blistered at the edges, four red pepperoni glowing like tail lights.

She tried to cut it. The knife slid along the crust, round the first loop, through the twist in the middle, and came back to where it started without a gap. Pale cheese kept dripping off the top in slow ribbons and pooling on the steel, then sliding itself back up as if someone had rewound it. Ruth set the knife down and said, to nobody, "That's not how a pizza works."
The gulls had gathered on the bin lids outside, the way they always did when the back door propped open. Mr Okafor from the newsagents came in for his morning roll, saw the loop on the counter, and offered a pound for it. She said no. He offered two. She said it wasn't for sale, then realised she had nowhere to put it that it wouldn't keep reappearing on the shelf.
By six the queue ran down to the bus stop. Ruth bit into the far side of the loop, and the near side grew back, pepperoni recounting themselves in the same red spots. She wrapped the thing in greaseproof paper, wrote Dev, this one's yours, it never runs out on the label, and slid it onto the warm shelf beside the bread.
