Small taco tattoo on the hand

Hand · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a taco sits on the back of a clenched hand, with the shell drawn in tan and orange tones and lettuce in green. The outline is dark and the shading is simple, giving the cartoon-like food motif a flat, graphic look. The hand is photographed against a plain pale blue background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The lift at Calder House had been broken since March, so Mrs Pallister carried her shopping up eleven flights every Thursday and complained to the stairwell about it. On the ninth landing one Thursday she found a taco sitting on the windowsill, its shell cracked and a little lettuce hanging out of one end like a green scarf. It was warm and it was looking out at the car park. She asked it what it wanted. It said it had come up from the chippy at the bottom in a paper bag and the bag had split, and that it had never seen the sky from above a bin.

A taco has no hands, so she held it in her fist and climbed the last two floors with the shopping hanging off her other arm. The lettuce grumbled at every landing. On the roof the wind was strong enough to lean on, and the taco asked her to set it on the parapet so it could face the flats across the road. She did. The wind took the lettuce first, one leaf at a time, and sent them spinning over the bins like little green flags being waved at somebody who had left.

The next morning the lift was working, a notice said so, and nobody in Calder House could say where the taco had gone. Only on the ninth floor, in the crack beside the windowsill, a boy named Kieran found a single leaf of lettuce, still damp, and he kept it in his school bag for a week before he ate it.
