Starburst with YAY lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black starburst with a jagged, spiky outline sits centred on a plain white background. The word YAY is set in white hand-drawn capitals across the middle of the burst. The image is flat with no shading, so the bold silhouette and simple lettering read clearly at a small size.

Nobody in Carrowmere had cheered since the old king died, because his successor taxed breath by the hour and the toll clerks counted every shout. Mab Tennery sold eels from a barrow by the north gate and kept her mouth shut like everyone else, until the morning her brother came back from the salt flats with a cart of unsold herring and a sack of sugar that had split in the rain. He tipped the sack over the cobbles, and the sugar glittered in the grey light like a broken crown, and Mab laughed so hard she dropped her knife into the eel tub.

The clerk, Osric Pell, came down the street with his tally board under one arm and his inkpot swinging from a cord. He stopped at the barrow and held out his palm. "That laugh is two pence," he said. "Pay it or I write it down."
Mab wiped her hands on her apron. She had nothing to pay with, and she had nothing left to lose, so she filled her chest the way her grandmother taught her to fill a bellows and shouted, "YAY!" The word went out of her in a jagged burst, sharp at every edge, and it struck the tally board, the inkpot and the clerk's spectacles all at once. The ink leapt out of the pot in a black star. The board cracked along its middle.
All down the north road, shutters banged open. Herring-men lifted their hats, a baker threw flour into the air, and somewhere a bell that had been silent for nine years began to ring on its own. Osric Pell stood in the middle of it with his ledger open, trying to find a page that still had room for a sum.
