Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words Stay Strong written in flowing white cursive script on a solid black background, with a small outlined heart at the end of the second word. The linework is fine and even, with tapered strokes and loops in the capitals. The image is monochrome, with no shading or other colour, and the lettering sits centrally with generous space around it.

Inside, I set the kettle on the stove and smoothed his letter flat on the table beside the ledger where I keep the toll. Forty-two crossings this month, eleven of them men going the other way with their faces turned from the wind. I have always thought the pass was a kind of door that only opens one way in winter. Nobody comes back up it until the snow has gone off the Gallow side, and by then the mules are thin and the people have changed.
I wrote back that night in my best hand, the one the schoolmaster used to praise. I told him about the goat that kept getting into the flour, the new planks on the lower ford, and how the old dog had stopped following me to the gate. At the bottom I wrote Stay strong, then sat looking at it for a long time, because it was what I had been saying to the window all winter and it had never once helped me. I put the pen down and drew a small heart after it instead, an open loop, the way Tomas used to draw them in the margins of his sums. In the morning the frost on the glass had made a fern of it, and the mule bells were coming up the track again.
