Stick figure sisters on a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

Two stick figure girls with smiling faces, hair and bows stand holding hands, with the words sisters by written above them and a small red heart beside the text. The figures have black outlines and are filled with blue and pink dresses, with small yellow flower details on each dress. The tattoo sits across the top of a bare foot against a bright blue cloth background.

The biro never worked properly on the back of the gas bill, so Maisie pressed harder, and the two girls came out with round heads like lollipops and arms that bent the wrong way at the elbow. Nell said they looked like they'd been stung. Maisie said that was the point, they were brave. They were eight and six that winter, the flat above Ashworth's chip shop smelled of vinegar and wet coats, and they had one drawing book between them, which was a rule.

The drawings went everywhere after that. On the bathroom mirror in the steam, on the inside lid of the bread bin, on the cardboard tray of a fish supper. Every picture had the same two girls holding hands, one with a bow and one with a flower on her dress, because Maisie had decided the flowers were for luck and Nell had decided they were for bees.

When Nell moved to Leeds at nineteen with a suitcase and a job at a call centre, the drawings left the walls and started travelling in envelopes. The first letter came with a stick girl in a blue dress and a line across the top that read sisters by, and nothing after it, because Maisie had run out of room and said the rest was obvious.

Nell still gets the envelopes. The stick girls have grown longer legs and the dresses have pockets now. Last month there was a new one: two figures holding hands across the fold of the page, and between them, in a gap exactly as wide as the postcode, a small red heart pressed so hard the paper had torn.
