Stiletto heels and legs in a square frame
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo shows two solid silhouetted high-heeled shoes with a strap across the foot, set beneath three thin vertical lines suggesting legs. The design sits inside a thin black square outline on the inner upper arm. The ink is pure black on pale skin, with bold solid fills for the shoes and fine single-line strokes for the frame and legs, shot against a striped shirt sleeve.

The snow shut the pass on the third day of December, and nine travellers came down to the inn at Hollin Gap with nothing but what they stood up in. Among them was a woman with a square of black cloth folded under one arm and a pair of narrow shoes she would not let anyone carry. The heels were as thin as knitting needles and the leather shone like wet slate. Old Maud, who kept the inn, asked her why anyone would cross a mountain in shoes like that. The woman said they were not for walking, only for keeping close, and that she had to tie them down whenever the wind came from the north.

That night the shoes stood by the hearth where the woman had set them. Maud banked the fire and went to bed with the door barred. Near midnight she heard a tapping on the floorboards, slow and even, like someone counting. When she came down with a candle the shoes were gone, and a line of small clean prints ran from the hearth to the door. Outside, the snow lay blue under the moon. The travellers were already at the windows, standing in their stockings, each one watching a pair of heels move out across the yard in step with the others.
Nobody saw the shoes come back. In the morning the woman was sitting by the stove with her cloak round her knees and her feet bare and wet. She said nothing about the night, and nobody asked her. When the pass opened in March the travellers went down the valley one by one, and the woman went with them, carrying her cloth.
Maud found the door frame scratched in the spring, a thin black square cut into the oak at the height of a woman's arm. Inside it, a few strokes of straight lines ran down toward the threshold. She folded the cloth that had been left behind and put it in the drawer with the candles, and she never once asked what it had been for.
