Storybook and Star Wars scenes across a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

The three panels show a boy holding a stick, a brown teddy bear walking beside a small R2-D2 style droid, and a grey AT-AT walker on a patch of grass. The linework is clean and outlined, with soft shading on the figures and a simple grass and ground setting. Colour ink is used throughout, with muted blues, browns, greys and greens, and the scenes are arranged as separate panels across the leg.

Tobias had been sent to the far field to count the sheep, which was a job for someone older, but his grandmother said the bear insisted on coming and somebody had to keep him from the cliff path. The bear was called Marmalade by everyone except the bear, who had never said what he preferred. He walked with his arms out a little, as if carrying a tray he had mislaid.

Beside them trotted Beep, a dome-headed droid no taller than a milk churn, who had washed up in the spring with a red scarf knotted at his neck and a sulky chirp that meant he disapproved of wet grass. Beep kept a log of everything in a voice like a kettle coming to the boil. Tobias had stopped asking what it wrote.

They reached the top of the island at noon, where the wind came in off the grey water. Something stood on the far slope: a tall grey walker on four bent legs, motionless, its head pointed at the sea as though waiting for a boat that had been cancelled years ago. Tobias's stick trembled. Marmalade sat down heavily in the grass.

Beep rolled forward, chirped twice, and asked the walker in its kettle voice whether it was lost. Nothing answered. Then the walker's head tilted, slowly, to look at the boy, and Tobias understood it had been looking for company all along. He lowered the stick, walked up the slope and sat down beside the great grey legs. "Sheep are that way," he said. "But you can come down for tea if you want."
