Two fine line black ink tattoos on the inner wrists, one reading strength and one reading joy, each with a small braille pattern above the word.

Strength and joy wrist tattoos in braille

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are pressed together, each with a small black ink tattoo. The left wrist shows the word strength in a thin cursive script with a row of braille dots above it, and the right wrist shows joy with a smaller braille pattern above. The linework is delicate and even, set against plain light skin and a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The embosser coughed twice before it gave up on the Thursday order, so Ada stood over the plate with a stylus and a magnifier, counting dots by hand. Sixty pages of a Victorian cookery book for the library in Hebden Bridge, every recipe raised under her fingers. Her mother had taught her to read the dots at a kitchen table with a slate and a bent nail, and Ada still moved her lips when she counted, the way her mother used to.

Near the foot of the last sheet, someone had slipped in a line that was not in the book. Six cells, a gap, then four cells, pressed a little too hard so the paper had torn at one corner. Nobody on the night shift admitted to it. Ada ran a fingertip over it twice and knew the shapes before she had translated them, the way you know a familiar street in the dark.

She asked Mr Okafor, the old foreman who came in to sweep and stayed to talk. He didn't need the magnifier. He laid his palm flat on the plate and said the dots had been pressed from the wrong side, which meant whoever wrote them had been reading backwards, the way you do when you learn by touch and never once look at the page. He said it as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world, and maybe it was.

Ada took a clean sheet from the rack, set it under the frame, and punched the two words again, this time the right way round. When she lifted it out the dots stood up cleanly under the lamp, and she left it face up to dry beside the cookery book.
