Sunflower tattoo on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A single sunflower sits on the inner wrist and forearm, with yellow and orange petals in overlapping layers and a rounded brown centre. Bold black outlines define each petal and the centre, with soft shading inside the petals. The flower is placed slightly off centre on the skin, with a blurred car interior behind it.

By the time the band packs its trumpet case, the Ashcombe village hall has emptied to stacked chairs and the smell of spilt lemonade. You ask the caretaker's boy to switch the wireless on instead, and he turns the dial until a waltz comes through the crackle. Someone has pinned paper sunflowers along the bunting, cut from a seed catalogue Mrs Aske kept in her greenhouse, their petals curling where the damp got at them.

Frank Dorrien is leaning on the tea urn with two cups gone cold. He asks whether you will walk home by the water meadows, and you tell him the lane is shorter and you have had enough of his brother's jokes for one evening. He laughs, then stops, because the wireless has found the same waltz you learned in Sunday school, the one you both stumbled through at the harvest supper when you were twelve and he trod on your hem.
So you dance it properly this time, counting out loud, and he counts with you, wrong on the third beat every time. Near the end he lifts the last paper sunflower off the bunting, the one with a brown paper centre that has run in the rain, and folds it into the pocket of your coat. Outside, the lamps along the lane are already lit, and you can feel its stiff petals against your hip all the way home.
