Sunflower with linework wings on the back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A yellow and orange sunflower with a dark centre sits above a pair of black linework wing shapes, with fine vine-like details and a thin stem trailing downward. The sunflower is shaded in warm yellows and oranges, while the wings and stem are drawn in black and grey lines with light shading. The tattoo is centred on smooth skin against a plain, softly lit background.

The marquee at Hollins Farm smelled of cut grass and diesel, and Aunt Maud had already sent back three sunflowers from the centre table because their faces had gone brown at the rims. I stood holding the bucket while she squinted at them as if they had personally offended her.

The bride had asked for sunflowers for a plain reason. Her father had grown them along the top field fence, and every August he walked the rows telling them how tall they were getting. I was sent to find the best heads on the farm that morning. Behind the barn the wild ones had gone over and the goldfinches were stripping them. Among them I found one still bright, its petals bent back like a skirt in wind, and beside it a cabbage white had settled on the stalk, wings opening and closing as if it were deciding something.

I cut the stem at an angle, the way Dad taught me, and carried it up the lane with the butterfly still on it. It rode with me for a hundred yards before lifting over the hedge, its dark-veined wings catching the sun. The bride saw it from the gate and laughed, and I didn't say anything about the little flurry of wings that had come with the flower.

At the reception the sunflower stood alone in a jam jar at the head of the table, beside the empty chair nobody had been willing to move. Aunt Maud said it looked like a lamp someone had left on. I thought it looked like a man who had just stepped out to check the fence.
