Kenny from South Park on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a cartoon character tattoo showing Kenny from South Park, with a round face, large white eyes, and an orange hood and parka. The bold black outlines and flat cel-style shading give it a clean, graphic look against the skin. The character sits centred on the leg, with a dark blurred background behind it.

The herring boats came back to Skerrow Bay on the third night after the gale, and Maggie Flett counted them from the harbour wall the way her grandmother had taught her, by their lamps and not their names. Eleven lamps, white and steady. Then a twelfth, low and orange, bobbing against the grey like a coal someone had forgotten to put out. It was the Sorley boat with the patched sail, and nobody was steering it.

When it grounded on the shingle, the men found a coat lashed to the mast, an oilskin the colour of a hot ember, its hood drawn up over nothing at all. Old Tam Sorley said the sea had dressed itself in the boy's clothes to save the bother of sending the boy. Nobody laughed. The hood was wet through and smelled of salt and tar, and when they turned it over, two round patches of lighter cloth showed where a pair of eyes ought to have been.
Maggie went down the steps to see it, because she was nine and had been told not to. The coat slid off the mast and onto the stones, and from inside the hood a small voice asked whether there was any supper left, because he had been out since Tuesday and was starving. Tam Sorley dropped his lantern. The boy stood up, brushed sand off his knees, and walked straight up the hill to his mother's door as if he had only been to the shop.
The village never settled whether he had drowned. His mother hung the orange hood on a nail by the back door and it never quite dried. Every spring, when the herring come in thick, the sea sends one lamp back early, and Maggie leaves the kettle on for whoever is wearing it.
