Crossed forearms under UV light show a small glowing swallow tattoo on one forearm and geometric band tattoos around the wrists.

Swallow and geometric bands under UV light

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two crossed arms and hands are photographed against a black background under blue ultraviolet light. A small swallow in fine outline sits on the upper forearm, and bands of geometric patterns with triangles and dotted lines wrap around the wrists and reach onto the back of one hand. The UV-reactive ink glows white and cyan against the blue skin, and the nails also glow.

The lamps went down one by one along the Dock Road field, and Nell Varga counted the swallows nesting under the canopy of the Big Wheel while the last punters argued over the dodgems. Her father had always said the birds knew when a fair was packing up before the showmen did, and this year they were early to leave.

The black light tent still smelled of spilt lager and hot dust. Along the trestle table she had laid out her pots of glow ink, the ones that lay flat and grey in daylight and woke up blue under the lamp. For a penny a line, children had let her paint triangles and dotted bands across their wrists, copied from a bangle the carousel man's wife used to wear. Tomasz, nine and fearless, had asked for a swallow on the back of his hand, and she had given him one that dove off his knuckle toward his thumb.

When the tent was empty, Nell sat on the upturned crate and pressed the lamp on. She drew a swallow in fine outline on the inside of her own wrist, her hand steady because her father had taught her steady. The lines flared cyan and white against her skin, the only bright thing in the whole field. Tomasz had come back for his torch, and he stood in the flap watching. "It vanishes in daylight," he said, disappointed. "It only shows when it's dark enough to see it," she told him.

At dawn the trucks rolled out toward the coast road. Nell stayed behind long enough to switch off the lamp and watch the canvas go black. Then, faintly, a bird of light lifted off the tent wall and folded its wings toward the gap in the flap, pointing south.
