Tabby cat with heart on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A seated tabby cat faces the viewer, with a small outlined heart on its chest. Thin circles and intersecting straight lines sit behind the cat, forming a geometric frame. The fur is built from fine stippled and hatched shading in grey ink, and the design is shown in black and grey on pale skin.

Mungo was already on the lamp-room sill when I came up the bank with the flask, sitting square as a loaf with his tail folded over his feet, watching the door the way the deputies watched the clock. Nobody had given him a name he answered to. The men called him the Overman's Cat because he sat in the same place every morning and never once got down to see the cages go.

My father swore he could tell a bad shift by the cat. If Mungo got up and went round the back of the winding house, the roof would be quiet that day. If he stayed where he was, the lamps came back clean and everyone went home. He wore an old tin heart on his collar, a Christmas gift from the lamp boys, its edges worn bright from his chewing. Some mornings I looked at the survey plan pinned above the desk, the rings the surveyors drew round the workings and the pencil lines that cut across them, and thought the cat had been set in the middle of it on purpose.

The spring the north level was declared dry, the overman spread the plan out on the bench to show the new roadway. Mungo jumped up onto the paper, stepped across the crossed lines one careful paw at a time, and sat down dead centre in the largest circle. Nobody had the heart to lift him. The men stood round in their boots and waited, and for once nobody hurried.

We went down that afternoon anyway. When the surveyors redrew the plan the next week, they kept the rings exactly where he had put them, and I still have the copy, with a ring of pencil dust round the place where he sat.
