The mountains are calling lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows three mountain peaks above the phrase The Mountains Are Calling And I Must Go, set in hand-lettered script and block capitals. The linework is clean and uniform in solid black on a plain white background, with simple hatching on the mountain shading. A ribbon banner sits beneath the words Must Go, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

Dear Morag, the 7.42 to Crianlarich has been cancelled again, so I am sitting on the bench outside the ticket hall with my rucksack between my knees and a flask of tea going cold beside me. The porter, a lad called Dougie with a cough like a rusty gate, says the line washed out near Tyndrum and nobody knows when a train will be back. I told him I have waited four years for this weekend and he laughed and said the hills will still be there, which is exactly what you would have said.

The ticket office has a poster on the wall, all hand-painted letters, a peak in the corner with its snow picked out in fine pen lines. Someone has stuck a sticker of a ribbon banner across the bottom corner, half peeled. I keep reading the words over and over while I wait: the mountains are calling, and I must go. I used to think it was a silly thing to put on a poster. Now I think whoever drew it understood the waiting part.

So here is my plan. I will walk out of the station and take the old drover's road up past the signal box, which Dougie swears is passable if you do not mind nettles. I will leave this letter in the postbox by the bridge so you get it on Monday, and you can tell everyone I did not sit on the bench all weekend like a coward. If the train comes after all, I will be on it. If it does not, I will be on the road, and that is more or less the same thing.
