Black fine line script tattoo reading "this is love" with a small heart and a long underline sweep, across the side of a foot.

This is love script on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script tattoo reads "this is love" with a small outlined heart after the final word, and a long single stroke runs beneath the lettering and curls up at the right. The linework is smooth and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The foot rests on a grey and cream blanket, with the tattoo placed across the lower side of the foot and the image framed from a slight angle.

Dear Ruth, I've finally got the tape on Dougie's old stick, the blade bent back where he took it against the boards in January. He came off the ice last night with a split lip and a grin, going on about a puck that wobbled off the boards like it had a mind of its own. He says you can hear a stick before you see it. Your father used to say the same thing, and I never believed him either.

The blade is what I keep looking at. Forty years I've been sharpening skates in the back of the shop on Carver Street, and I have never once seen a blade curl up at the toe the way this one does. Dougie wanted it painted. I told him the paint would chip the first time it met the glass, so he got the marker out and wrote on the shaft instead, the words he says to himself before every game, the ones we used to shout from the van on the way to Doncaster. Then he drew a little heart at the end and said I wasn't to laugh.

I didn't laugh. I stood in the cold of the shop with the grinder ticking down and thought about you at eleven, drawing hearts in the condensation on the van window while your father pretended not to watch. Some things only need saying once, on a rink or in a car, and after that they get carried about like a spare set of laces.

So here's the stick, bound and ready for Saturday. If you're coming up, bring the good kettle. I'll leave the back door unlocked and the light on in the hall, same as always. Love, Mum.
