Three birds on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with wavy blonde hair is photographed from behind, showing a small black tattoo of three birds in flight on her upper back near the shoulder. The birds are drawn with simple dark outlines and solid fills, with no shading. Her white off-shoulder top has a separate printed design of dark wings across the back, which is clothing rather than a tattoo.

Maud had counted the swifts twice before the cart reached the bottom gate, and both times there had been three, which was one more than the orchard could afford to lose. Her uncle's ledger lay open on the bonnet of the Morris, weighted with a windfall Bramley already browning at the bruised side. Beyond the wall the trees ran down to the river in rows so straight they looked ruled.

Late August was the difficult month. The Discovery apples were ready and the pickers from the village had not come, so she worked alone with a ladder that sank into the soft ground and a canvas bag that dragged at her shoulder. Every evening the same three birds came over the hedge low and fast, wings pointed like arrows on a map, then climbed away towards the marsh as if someone had called them. Her uncle had named them the Alder boys after the trees where they roosted. He had been wrong about nearly everything else, so she decided not to trust him about that either.
On the last Thursday of the month she left the gate open on purpose. The birds dropped into the top row, pecking at the fallen fruit, and did not startle when she walked between the trunks with the bag. She filled it slowly, counting under her breath, and at the end of the row the ledger page blew open in the wind off the river. Her uncle had written one line in pencil across the bottom: Keep three, the rest are for the wasps.
She laughed, then stopped, because the birds had lifted together and were already small above the marsh. She wrote the number in the margin, three, fed, gone, then closed the book and let the last of the Discovery drop where they liked.
