Three cartoon characters with hearts on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large cartoon-style tattoo shows a smiling red-haired boy at the top, with two girls holding old-style telephones below him on either side. Small red hearts and white sparkle marks surround the central figure, and a dotted border frames the group. Bold black outlines sit beside flat areas of red, orange, yellow, blue and green, with the tattoo set against a dark textured background.

The party line rang twice for us that night, which Mam said meant trouble. I had the receiver pressed to my ear in the cold scullery, breath clouding the glass, while snow came sideways past the window and the whole valley went quiet except for the wire humming on its poles. Dell Hartigan's voice crackled through, bright as a bell, asking if anybody had seen his good hat.

Two girls had been on that line all autumn. Marjorie Vance rang from the Lower Farm in her brother's coat, laughing too loud at everything, and Pearl Dunmore rang from the big house with her curls set and her father's money behind every word. Dell had a way of talking to each of them as though the other were only a rumour. He promised Marjorie he'd help with the lambing. He promised Pearl a ride in the new motor. Both promises were made on the same Tuesday, and on Saturday both girls stood at the crossroads in their best boots, waiting.
I walked out to find him on Christmas Eve, lantern swinging, drifts up to my knees. He was sat on a hay bale in the barn with his hat in his hands and the face of a boy caught in the orchard. Neither girl had come to the barn. They had found each other at the crossroads instead, it turned out, and had spent the afternoon telling the snow exactly what they thought of him.
By New Year the two of them rang each other every night on my line, laughing at Dell's expense, and every night they asked me, very politely, to tell him he was not invited. I told him. He still wore the hat.
