Peter Pan and Wendy on both calves
Other · Colour · Photo
Two coloured tattoos sit side by side on a pair of calves, one showing Peter Pan in profile with a green tunic, a red feather in his cap and a sword at his belt, and the other showing Wendy in a blue dress leaning forward with her eyes closed. Both figures are drawn with smooth, clean outlines and soft shading, set against an oval background of deep blue and purple with small white stars and a shooting star. The mix of warm skin tones, green and blue creates a bright, cohesive pair that mirrors the two figures facing each other.

Dear Ines,

The lamps in the dorsal corridor have been dimmed to "night" again, which means the children on Deck Nine have stopped asking whether the stars outside are real. I told them they are. Mostly I think they are, though the ship's sensors say the nearest one we can see is a point of light we will never reach, and that is a sort of truth too.
Yesterday Tomas from the hydroponics crew brought me an old printer's sheet he found behind a panel in the archive hold. It shows a boy in a green tunic with a feather in his cap, and a girl in blue leaning towards him with her eyes shut, as if waiting for a kiss or a wish. Someone has pencilled "Second Dream" across the bottom in a hand I recognise from the galley wall, where my mother wrote the menu for forty years. I think she copied it from a book, the one with the flying children we read before the long sleep.
I have pinned the sheet above the seed bank. The children keep telling me the boy would never leave the girl behind, and I keep telling them the story is really about leaving, that the window stays open whether anyone comes back through it or not. They don't believe me. Good. I would rather they believed in the boy with the sword.
Write back when the relay clears. Tell me whether Mum ever finished that drawing.
Love, Hana
