Three cherry blossoms on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Three cherry blossom flowers sit in a loose cluster across the upper arm, with one flower slightly overlapping the others. The petals are shaded softly in pale and deep pink with grey washes, and the centres are rendered with dark stamens and fine speckled detail. The composition is horizontal and centred on the arm, against plain skin with a blurred background.

Dear Nell,

The cherry in the back garden has finally let go, and you were right about the wind. It came round the side of the shed on Tuesday and took the whole top branch in one go, so when I went out with the kettle the lawn looked as if someone had spilt a bag of sugar across it, pink at the edges where the petals had bruised. Mr Okafor from number nine stood at the fence with his hands in his pockets and said it was a shame. I told him it was only blossom, and it always comes down.
I've been sorting Dad's things in the shed, which is where the trouble started. There's a biscuit tin of seed packets in his handwriting, dated the year you were born, and tucked in among the sweet peas is a folded sheet of greaseproof with three blossoms drawn on it in pencil. He'd tried to wash them in with a brush, and the colour bled into the paper so the centres went grey and soft, the way the real ones do when the light is failing. You'll remember he never could get the stamens right. He'd dab at them with the end of a matchstick until they looked as if they'd been dragged through soot.
I nearly forgot the kettle entirely. Instead I took the secateurs out and cut the one low branch that still had buds on it, brought it in and stood it in a jam jar on the windowsill, the way Mum used to. The petals are going papery already, but the pink hasn't quite gone out of them yet.
So come at the weekend and bring the good scissors. We'll press what's left between the pages of his atlas, and I'll send the drawing back with you when you go. I've written the date on the back in his hand, so you'll know it's his.
Love, Mum
