Tiny elephant line tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline drawing of a baby elephant with its trunk raised sits on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading or fill. A silver coin placed beside the tattoo shows its scale, and the plain skin background keeps the focus on the design.

The calf would not walk past the cairn at Kessar Gap until someone gave it a coin. My uncle said the old drivers had always done this, pressing a copper into the stones for the spirits of the road, and the calf, born in the lowland fields the spring before, seemed to know the custom better than we did. It planted its feet at the bend where the track narrows to the width of two donkeys, lifted its trunk high, and waited.

We had come up from Sarai with forty sacks of salt and no coin to spare, so I gave it a horn button from my coat. The calf sniffed it, sneezed, and trumpeted a note so loud that snow slid off the ledge above us and stones rattled down the far slope. My uncle swore at the beast, but the wind shifted, and out of the grey came a string of mules carrying brass lanterns and a merchant who had lost his way three days before. He had heard the trumpet, he said, and followed it.
We crossed the rest of the pass together, his men and our mixed caravan, with the calf at the head of the line and its trunk up like a bowsprit. At the summit it stopped again and would not go on until I let it face the valley, where the sun was breaking through the cloud. I understood then that it had never been asking for anything. It was showing us the road.
I still have the button. Each spring I take it out of the tin on my windowsill, turn it over in my palm, and think of that calf standing at the cairn with its trunk raised, calling the lost ones home.
