Totoro with red poppies on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A grey, faceted Totoro-style character sits at the centre, with large red poppies behind and beside it and small black soot sprites scattered around. The character is shaded with fine stippling and angular geometric planes, while the poppies use smooth red tones with black centres. The design fills a vertical area of lower leg against a plain pale background.

"Mind the stove, Nell, it's sulking again," Dad called from the cabin doorway, and she was already on her knees with the poker, shaking the grate until the soot came down in little black drifts.

Everyone on the Kennet knew the soot sprites lived in the flue and came out when a boat had been cold too long. Dad said they were the reason the Perpetua never sprang a leak: they ate the damp out of the timbers. Nell had never managed to watch one stay still long enough to count it. Tonight three of them sat on the coal scuttle staring at her with eyes like boot buttons, and out past the porthole the grey shape under the willow at the lock was shifting, heavy and patient, the way it did before rain.
The seed packet had come in Mum's last box, its paper soft as cloth, with a drawing of poppies on the front. Nell had never planted them. She carried the packet up the towpath in the dark, pressed the seeds into the mud where the willow roots came out of the bank, and said the grey thing's name aloud, which Dad had always said you must never do. Nothing came. Then the stove behind her gave one clean roar and went quiet, and when she looked back the sprites were gone, and the poppies were already red in the lamplight, their black hearts turned towards the water.
