The photograph shows a small tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm, with fingers visible at the top of the frame. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fog came off the moor before the light did, so Edwin Hale spent the first hour of the morning on his knees, feeling through the wet grass for the brass bolt with his fingertips. Mrs Pryce at the farm below had promised the stone would be under the cairn with the broken top, where her grandfather said it had always been, but the cairn had been rebuilt by sheep and the old men who remembered it were forty years in the churchyard.

He had a theodolite in its box, a steel chain of sixty-six feet, and a notebook with three pencilled bearings already crossed out. Somewhere in the white below him were the other two corners of the triangle, a church tower in Hebden and a quarry chimney on the far ridge, and until he could see them he could not prove the county map was right. The county wanted the map by Friday. The county had never walked up here in a wet coat.

At half past nine the sun thinned the fog to a grey sheet and he saw the chimney first, then the tower, sharp as pins pushed into cloth. He drew the line between them in his head, then pressed his thumb into the turf where the third corner had to be. The bolt was there under two inches of peat, its head worn round and bright as a sixpence from a century of boots.

He sat back on his heels and wrote the bearing down. Nobody would ever read the page but him, so he drew a small ring above the upper point of his triangle, the way his father had marked the chapel roof on the old estate plans, and left it open at the top so the rain could get in.
