Triangle band tattoo around a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A thin band of black linework circles the upper thigh, made of a row of small triangles above a dotted line and a repeating row of larger triangles. The fine, dotted and geometric lines are crisp and evenly spaced, with light shading inside some triangles. The tattoo sits across the centre of the frame against a pale background, with the frayed edge of denim shorts above it.

Mind the step, it's loose, and keep your hands out of the flour while I talk, for it gets in everyone's mouth eventually. Now. Before the carts, before the bell, there was a bakehouse on Coldharbour Lane where the ovens were lit at three and nobody spoke until the first tray came out.

Old Ansel Dunn ran it, and he had a rule chalked above the proving shelf: every sack of rye wore a band of paper round its neck, cut in triangles pointing up like the teeth of a saw. The lad who came to them that winter, a thin boy called Pim with a cough, thought it a foolish fashion. He cut his bands crooked. Ansel took the scissors off him and cut them again, slow, one point at a time, and pricked a row of pinholes between the triangles so a man could count the loaves by touch in the dark.
Pim asked why the dots mattered. Ansel said the dots were the hours the dough needed to rise, and a baker who lost count lost a morning. Pim didn't believe him for a month. Then the frost came, the flour turned to grit in the damp sacks, and it was only the counted bands that let the carters feel out the good stock and leave the bad. Pim cut his next band straight, and he never told Ansel he had done it on purpose.
So when you see the sky go grey over the chimneys before the bell, count the points with me. Three, then three, then three. That is how the bread knows it is morning.
